About Us

Highfield retirement livery is run by Heather and Mike Barker who live at Highfield Farm.  Heather has over 20 years’ experience in caring for horses.  From caring for her own horses on a day to day basis to catering for eventers on the road.  She has qualified with a degree in Equine Sports Science (with Equestrian Psychology) and has a master’s degree in Equine Health and Welfare.  While studying for both these degrees she specialised in Equine Nutrition and presented at the 5th European Workshop on Equine Nutrition in 2010.  After leaving university she went to work for one of the UK’s leading premix manufacturers (vitamin and minerals for animal diets) working alongside some of the best equine nutritionist.

Mike has lived and farmed at Highfield all his life.  He knows how to manage and use the land to give your horse the best grazing conditions possible.  He will also make the forage that you horses will eat through the winter months.  As someone who has cared for a variety of animals, Mike has the experience to ensure your horse is in the highest welfare standards possible.  Mike also owns the company Highfield Equestrian (www.highfieldequestrian.com) and builds bespoke arenas and stables.  Stable manufacturing is on site here at Highfield and therefore if require accommodation can be made to suite your horse.

Other people that are in the Highfield retirement livery team include highly qualified vets, AWF registered farriers, equine dentists SQP, veterinary physiotherapists and agronomists to keep your horse and the land in tip top condition.
